[UPDATE] HP webOS phones launched

Hewlett-Packard (HP) bought Palm, an early pioneer in handheld devices, to tap into the fast-growing smartphone industry and get access to Palm’s acclaimed webOS operating system. HP plans to adopt the webOS platform as a consideration for smartphones and other mobile devices.. The HP webOS smart phones are expected to be in market in 2011.
WebOS :
WebOS is Palm’s proprietary mobile operating system running on the Linux kernel. It’sgraphical user interface is designed for use on devices with touchscreens. The web OS features significant online social network and Web 2.0 integration. The web OS interface is based on a system of “cards” used to manage multitasking. Applications can be launched from either the “Launcher”, which displays a default of three pages of applications icons in a scrollable grid, or the Quick Launch bar, which displays five icons inline horizontally. The user switches between running applications by clicking the front-face button to bring up the “cards” and then flicking left and right on the screen. Applications are closed by flicking a “card” up—and “off”—the screen. WebOS also supports multi-touch gestures, enabling most navigational input to be made using the touchscreen.
WebOS includes a feature called Synergy that integrates information from many sources. WebOS allows a user to sign in to accounts on Gmail, Yahoo!, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Microsoft Outlook. Contacts from all sources are then integrated into a single list. For messaging, Synergy combines all conversations with each contact into a single chat-style window. The webOS web browser, simply named “Web,” is WebKit-based. Specific features of the web browser include the ability to play .pls file types without the need for an additional application. Adobe demonstrated a version of Adobe Flash Player for webOS.
Features :
The applications that Palm already gave are like Messaging, calendar, photos, camera, video, youtube, Google Maps, Memos, Clock , Calculator, AppCatalog, Amazon MP3, Doc view, PDF view, Tasks, Contacts, VZ Navigator. Now some new applications will be added when HP release their phones. A 1GHz ARM processor and 512 MB RAM will be used. The phone will run WebOS 2.0, which will be faster booting and have push integration. This gives punters messages from social networking sites flashing up as notifications on the smartphone. The HP webOS phonewill have a “flatter” screen, a microUSB port and longer battery life.
PalmPhones :
However, while webOS generated some positive reviews installed on devices like the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, a poor marketing campaign led to a little success with the platform leading to Palm’s buyout by HP. Also the main factor leading to their failure is the lack of applications for their mobiles.
HP’s Plans:
HP didn’t reveal the much expected webOS phones specification officially that they are going to release soon. It may be named “PalmPre 2” as the next version of Palm pre. But sure, they will definitely provide a better, efficient webOS smart phone than Palm did before. The webOS phones have a heavy competition along with the goggle’s android mobiles, the blackberry, the Windows Phone 7 and the apple’s iPhone. HP announces its entry in the smart phone business by releasing the webOS phones next year. Also HP is not only going to install the webOS in the smartphones only but also to its other products like HP tablets.
